How to Increase Productivity at Work When Family Urgently Needs Your Attention

December 6, 2016

It would be great if at any given moment we could be completely focused on our work and never be distracted by the personal issues that need attention. But the truth is, life doesn't work like that. Sometimes things come up, your family, children or parents need emotional or practical support, your best friend is in
despaired need of your time. Sometimes you'd catch a cold and it knocks you out of your schedule for couple of days. What about that time once per month when your emotions are high and everything seems to slip from under control. Sometimes your spouse asks for you to be here for them and you know, this is the one time, you cannot not to attend to their needs. How do you keep up with your projects, improve productivity at work, even though all this stuff is happening on the background?

Here are some practical tips for productivity.

Tip number one:

Establish a good daily routine for your work. Have a plan stating 3 most important things that need to be done every day. Schedule it in your calendar in advance.

This needs to be done regularly and be your good productivity habit, so when something comes up you are not completely lost. It's much harder to get back on track while you have to deal with the crisis. So having daily planner filled up with the minimum of 3 things to do daily is a must.

Tip number two:

Have a general strategy for your work. What are you trying to achieve? What are your goals? Again, this you need to know before you begin any work. It also helps when emotions are over the top. If you know what results you are looking for, then you just keep up with it. For example, if networking is one of your marketing strategies, then you just have to show up for the networking event. You don't need to decide in the crisis whether you have to network. You already know it's part of what needs to be done. In a crisis everything seems like it's urgent and all work stuff is not a priority. It's true, the work is not your priority all the time, but it's still needs you. It's ok to allow yourself to be on autopilot until you can fully focus again.

Tip number three:

Have a plan minimum as well as plan maximum.

Let's say you are working at your normal capacity. A Plan Maximum would go into motion when you unexpectedly have freed extra time to work on your projects. For example, one of your projects got canceled, or got completed before the deadline. Now you can take time off, which I would totally advice. And, also, you now have extra time to give to your other projects. So you can do more than usual, and, of course, get better results or achieve your goal faster.

Now, Plan Minimum, is your safety net for when you unexpectedly have less than normal time to work. All of the reasons we covered at the beginning would qualify. So, you can not give your work 100%, give it at least 50%. Decide, it's ok to do that sometimes. That decision will save your from feelings of guilt and overwhelm. Stress doesn't help you to be productive and, of course, is not good for dealing with urgent family matters.

All together, these three productivity tips would help to keep you on track, without overwhelm and anxiety about your work. They will help you to be positive and present with your family or whomever needs your attention right now. You are not going to feel resistant and resentful of giving them your time. You will know, your work is not going to collapse without you.

Let's make sure you are prepared for all of the good and bad
surprises. If you are looking to keep up with your productivity, your assignment for this week will be to:

Plan out your next month or two, stating at least 1 thing you will do for your business every day.

Map up a strategy for your marketing, client/project work and paperwork. Write what things you need to do to achieve the goals. Put that list on the wall in front of you, to remind you what you are doing, and, of course, use that list when things spin out of control

Create plan maximum and plan minimum for your work. Plan Maximum will consist of all of the extra projects you can work on when you have extra time. And Plan Minimum will consist of the bare minimum that needs to be done, even if something urgent coms up.
